Backyard Birds Update

The Christmas snowstorm and the following bout of frigid weather have brought birds to the feeders in droves. The numbers of goldfinches, house finches, mourning doves and juncos at our feeders more than tripled the day after the storm! We have regular visits from nuthatches, titmice, chickadees, cardinals and blue jays at our seed feeders. Juncos, white-throated sparrows, song sparrows and doves feed on our seed tray and on the seed we throw on the deck. Of course the squirrels enjoy the seed on the deck as well, but less so now that we just use Nutrasaff (also called golden safflower) on our deck. The birds love it, but the squirrels just pick at it.

Downy, hairy, and red-bellied woodpeckers visit our suet feeders everyday and a male flicker drops in a couple of times a day. Our other birds enjoy the suet as well as including a pair of Carolina wrens!

We were delighted to see 3 male bluebirds at our heated birdbath the day after the storm. Many birds utilize the bath including our Carolina wrens, goldfinch, and titmice. The water in our bath evaporates quickly in the zero degree weather and often requires refilling more than once a day. But the birds really appreciated it!

We haven’t seen any winter finches at our feeders yet. There have been scattered reports around the state of pine siskins at thistle feeders, but we haven’t heard of any locally yet. Siskins and redpolls are always worth looking for among the goldfinches. The only unusual sparrow we have seen at our feeders has been an occasional Savannah sparrow, but we keep looking for a possible field, chipping, white-crowned, or Harris’s sparrow or even a dickcissel among our juncos and other sparrows.

Field Birding Updates

There have many snowy owls showing up already this year, with several seen regularly on Plum Island and reports from Salisbury and on Crane Beach in Ipswich.

Several bald eagles have been hunting around Newburyport Harbor and further up river. More should continue to arrive from further north as the temperatures continue to drop.
A few crossbills have been seen in western and central Massachusetts and are worth looking for around the campground area of Salisbury Beach State Reservation as well as on Plum Island. You may get lucky to see one at your feeders!

Mergansers, bufflehead and goldeneye ducks are in the rivers and there are loons, grebes, eider, scoters and long-tailed ducks off the coast. Rough-legged hawks, harriers and a peregrine falcon or two have been seen around the marshes on Plum Is. and Salisbury.
