Backyard Bird Update

The ‘roller coaster” weather has the birds feeding feverishly at the feeders. They anticipate the drops in temperature long before we do. They continue to fuel up for the remaining winter weather ahead.

In addition to the usual juncos, tree sparrows, cardinals, goldfinches, chickadees and titmice, there has been a good flight of red-breasted nuthatches this season. These cute cousins of our resident white-breasted nuthatches are visiting feeders throughout the area.

Pine Siskins have joined some of the goldfinches at the thistle feeders. Keep an eye out for them, as well as for redpolls as the natural food supply dwindles during the winter. Both of these species could be coming to feeders more readily in the weeks ahead.

Don’t forget the suet for the woodpeckers and many customers have seen bluebirds in their yard, especially at the suet and heated bird baths!

Field Birding Update

There have been few snowy owls this year, with only occasional reports from Plum Island and at least one snowy on Crane Beach in Ipswich. There have been recent reports of a snowy owl in Rye and in Hampton, New Hampshire along the coast.

We saw 2 adult bald eagles on the ice in Newburyport Harbor last week, but that ice has since melted. The fluctuating temperatures have kept much of the waters north of us open and, therefore, not as many eagles have visited the Merrimac River as in years past. However, we know that could change as we near February.

A few red crossbills have been seen in the campground area of Salisbury Beach State Reservation as well as on Plum Island. Bohemian waxwings have only made it down to central New Hampshire thus far, but worth keeping an eye out should their need for fruit bring them down to Massachusetts before winter’s end.

Bufflehead and Goldeneye ducks are in the rivers and there are loons, grebes, eider, scoters and long-tailed ducks off the coast. Rough-legged hawks, harriers and a peregrine falcon or two have been seen along the marshes on Plum Is. and Salisbury.
